Tripods

I usually place my recorders in dry bags and hang them from branches. However from time to time I'll come across an opportunity, such as when we are drinking coffee at Black Dog Cafe in the Tallahassee Lake Ella park where one can always see & hear flocks of birds and hundreds if not thousands of vocal ducks and geese.

Though I've been able to collect audio with my Sony PCM D100 by holding it in my hand, a much better approach is to use a portable tripod to keep vibrations and unwanted noise to a minimum.

The JOBY Gorillapod has always been a favorite of mine for use with a handheld recorder. I can bend the legs to securly wrap around a tree limb or park bench. The tripod also stands just fine on its own. Besides the JOBY's versatility the price is reasonable for a piece of equipment I've put through rough environments and it still performs as expected.

In addition to the JOBY Gorillapad, the Manfrotto Mini Tripod is handy for table top type recording. The Manfrotto Mini is about half the size of the Gorillapad which makes it easy to carry in a pocket or backpack. With legs ergonomically designed to fit in the hand, the tripod can also work well as a short movie/selfie stick. The Manfrotto Mini Tripod is a must for any field recording equipment pack.

1/4" male to 3/8" female adapters are a necessity when carrying these portable tripods along with GoPro and associated video recording equipment.

I quickly learned that I would come across special situations on a regular basis that demanded a tripod with 1/4" male connections. Avoiding disappointment was easy when carrying several of these adapters in my field pack. Highly recommended!
